Understanding Signal Attenuation

This simulator demonstrates how signals weaken (attenuate) as they travel over distance. Signal attenuation occurs due to factors like:

• Free-space path loss: Signal power decreases as it spreads over distance
• Absorption: Materials in the signal path absorb energy
• Reflection/refraction: Signals can be redirected or partially blocked

The amplifier boosts the weakened signal to restore it to a usable level, but this process may also amplify noise that the signal has picked up along the way.
